Week of January 9, 2017

This is going to be another great week!! If you haven't signed and turned in your child's Field Trip Permission Slip, please do so soon. Our Field Trip is Wednesday to the JCA.
Our Resources for the week are: MONDAY~ P.E., TUESDAY~ P.E. and THURSDAY~ MUSIC. Friday is Sunglasses Day. I can't wait to see the cute sunglasses the students wear. Also, Wednesday is an Early Release Day.

MATH
We will be working on making groups that have one less than the group we are given. This can be tricky for the students, so please practice with your child.  We will also continue to compare groups and use the vocabulary more than and less than.

SAXON, SIGHT WORDS & BLENDS
We will use letter cards for word building, complete a reader and focus on letter U in CVC words. Letter u can be a little tricky, so here is a catchy Hooked on Phonics video to get the students thinking!
We have learned so many Sight Words this year!! The second quarter goal was to read 40 words and many students did. :) If your child is having trouble with sight words do not make them keep up with the words we are learning weekly in class. Take a few steps back and focus on past words.
Our words for the week are : do, been, your & little.

Now the fun that I know the students will love and will help them gain more confidence in Reading and Writing... BLENDS! We are focusing on the ch. Here is the slideshow we will looking at in class.

READING
To prepare us for our Field Trip to the JCA, we will be focusing on the Native Americans. We will talk about a few different tribes, the Chiefs, the different uses of buffalo and the native american ways. The students will even learn a few new words like parfleche, travois and pemmican!  Below are the titles of the stories and the vocabulary we will be discussing in each.
borrow, roamed, shelter, tribes
agile, sacred, warriors
chief, mischief, parfleche, travois
bay, feast, wading

Writing
I love Opinion Writing and I hope the students will too! We will be discussing their opinions on many different topics. We will discuss food that they enjoy, places they LOVE to visit, and their favorite part about lunch, recess, and fun Fridays! It's going to be so much fun to see what the students say.
While we are writing, I will still review how sentences begin with an uppercase letter, that unknown words need to be stretched out and that we must always have punctuation at the end.
