Week of January 17

This week is going to be another great week! We have a busy day everyday and we even have two Assemblies!! One is the Kick Off Ceremony for Jump Rope for Heart. (If you haven't heard about Jump Rope for Heart before, make sure to look back at the old posts and read about the American Heart Association Program.) The other is for a School Fundraiser. (More information about the fundraiser should be going home later this week.)
Our Resources this week are Tuesday~ MUSIC, Wednesday~ ART & Thursday~ COMPUTER LAB. We even have a new member joining the Six-Year-Old-Club!! Make sure to tell Alexis Happy Birthday on Thursday and welcome her to the Club.
Friday is Hat Day. I can't wait to see the cute hats... purchased ones and homemade ones. It's always great to see how creative the kids can be! No one has signed up for Fun Friday Snacks. So if you would like to sign up for this Friday or any other Friday, send me an email. :)

MATH
We are finishing up the module by reviewing more than and less than. There was some trouble understanding the concept together last week. ~~The students are given two groups and they need to fill in the blanks for the sentences. _____ is more than ____, and _____ is less than _____.

So... if the numbers are 6 and 10.
The students would need to write in 10 is more than 6, and 6 is less than 10.
Our End of the Module Test is scheduled for Friday.

SAXON, SIGHT WORDS, BLENDS AND MORE!
We will review using U as a short vowel sound in  CVC words. Plus we will focus on letter Z.
Our Sight Words for the week are an, if, her & called.
Our Blend this week is the CL- clock, close, clam, etc. Practice having your child come up with words that begin with cl. Here is the slideshow we will be using in class.
Now on to the new item I will be adding~ the at word family. I am adding this in so that the students get an adequate amount of practice before they are assessed on substituting beginning sounds.  So make sure to practice with your child using this format: "I have cat. Lets change the /c/ to a /p/. What's our new word?" Some students may be able to do this orally. Others may need to write it down and see the letters until they get used to the pattern and realize the middle and ending sound stay the same. Here is a video to get them excited!
READING
We will be enjoying a few stories from Duval Reads and we will have the story Raven: A Trickster Tale from the Pacific Northwest by Gerald McDermott.
Little Bear Goes Hunting, The Lenape, People of the Seasons, & Native Americans Today.
We will be focusing on naming characters, setting and retelling the events in the order that they happen.
Here is a Youtube video for the Raven book.

WRITING
Our writing this week will be our opinions about what makes school fun. We will also have a Grammar lesson about s and es. (On i-Ready the students are beginning to build words with s and I have noticed quite a few are having difficulty remembering that the plural for cat is cats and not cas.)

SCIENCE
We will be revisiting Gravity and discussing what it would be like to live in a world with no gravity. What would it be like eating a sandwich? What about getting dressed and brushing your hair? Or playing games: video games, barbie dolls, race cars?
We watched this Gravity video last week, enjoy it again with your child.
