Week of January 30

For those of you that weren't aware, a school year is 180 days. Since last Friday was the 100th day... that means we have 80 days left of the school year. I still have a lot planned, so please make sure that tardies and absences do not happen unless they are absolutely necessary. Thank you!

This week we  lots of Resources. On Monday~MEDIA, Tuesday~P.E., Wednesday~MUSIC and Friday~ART.  Tuesday is Chuck E. Cheese Night. A portion of the proceeds go to support our CLE Safety Patrols! I plan on going and I hope to see many of you there. The fundraiser time is from 3p.m.-9p.m. We also have a student joining the 6-Year-Old-Club. Happy Early Birthday goes out to Noah.  Our Fun Friday activity is Boots Day and Komarea is bringing in snacks for the class.

A few quick announcements: Monday we will have a later lunch (10:55) due to First Grade having a Field Trip. Please make sure to send in the Zoo Papers~ permission slip, money, lunch choice. The Book Keeper informed us of a new way we have to receipt the money at school. Also, for the past week we have had a teacher in our room. For those of you that may have heard, her name is Ms.Taylor. She is going to be a new teacher at Chimney Lakes and she has been in the room observing our daily routine. That way she can set up a daily routine of her own. (I am not leaving CLE. So please do not fret about her replacing me. You and your children are "stuck with me for the rest of the year!" haha)

MATH
We will be completing the lesson from Friday~ making a Number Bond Poster for number 6, along with posters for numbers 7 & 8. The goal is for the students to learn how to compose and decompose numbers, to know that a number is made up of parts. For instance; with number 5. The students understood that 3 and 2 together made 5. But there was confusion that 5 and 0 could also make 5.
Also, we will looking at vertical and horizontal number bonds. It may sound strange, but I believe the students may like them more than our traditional number. It may also clear up any misconceptions they have over the different parts of the groups.
Here is a peek at one of our Problem Sets we will be
completing this week.  You'll notice the number bond like we've learned, but it also has a horizontal number bond.

SAXON, SIGHT WORDS, BLENDS & MORE!
This area has increased with so many different things this quarter!! We will be looking at the C and K spelling rule this week. We will also be learning about putting letters in Alphabetic/ ABC order.  We will be doing a lot of word work with letter tiles.
The students are having some trouble when asked about the ending sound or words and pictures. So please practice that at home. Most have mastered beginning sounds and I will be administering that test some time this week. :)
Our Sight Words this week are: his, may, from & as.
Our Blend is FR.
(The students are really getting excited about blends! They point them out to me when they are reading books and are so proud that they know the two letters come together to make one sound. It's adorable!)
Our word family this week is the -ack Family. Have your child practice coming up with real words that would be in the family. I notices from the video they come up with quite a few words that have blends at the beginning.
Also, make sure to practice for our Sound Writing Test. I will be saying a letter sound and the students are expected to write the letter that matches the sound. The writing may be done with uppercase or lowercase letters. :)

READING
We will have a Learning For Life Lesson about Courage and accepting consequences. We will discuss how the students always have a choice to make in a situation and that the choice they choose might be a tough choice. The lesson then goes on to having the students act out the right choice for given situations: a crayon box falls on the floor, a student is on the swings and doesn't know how, a boy gets pushed down, etc. We will also brush on bullying.
We will review and take our Module Test on Native Americans. Make sure to discuss what a shelter is and the different types, the different areas where they Native Americans lived and the ways they got their food and their clothing (from their head dresses on their heads down to moccasins on their feet).
On Thursday we will begin the new Module on Kings and Queens. We will begin by figuring out the meanings of unknown words and using them in sentences correctly. An example for this module would be the word servants. ~The people who did chores for the Kings and Queens. The sentence might be= The servants cleaned the table for the King.   Another standard we will begin is identifying reasons an author gives to support an opinion. This one can be a little tricky, because they will want to give their opinions, but we will practice so that they will understand our focus is the author's opinion.
Our stories this week are listed below, along with the vocabulary from both:
What Are Kings and Queens
kingdom, rules, royal, servants

The Royal Family
advantages, crown prince, disadvantages, prosperity, reign

Writing
The students will complete the opinion pieces they began last week, along with their Literacy Week pictures. (I am crossing my fingers my new phone arrives this week and I will be able to take pictures of the work they've done!! )
I will be reminding the students what their writing is expected to look like: Sentences beginning with an uppercase letter, spaces in between words, sight words spelled correctly, unknown words stretched to hear sounds (beginning and ending sounds must be written), and punctuation at the end. We will also discuss reasons why they would have liked to live long ago with the Native Americans.
**I will be collecting this writing piece as a grade.**
