Week of January 5, 2017

Well these two days are going to be filled with lessons, centers, and end of the Quarter Testing. (I didn't get a chance to finish everything before break... but I was pretty close! haha) We have one Resource this week on Friday, it is Art. We also have Character T-Shirt Day. On Saturday Jaiden joins the 6 Year Old Club!! 

I will be adding new Fun Friday Snack Dates. Make sure to let me know what date you would like to sign up for. :) Thanks in advance!!

MATH

We will be making groups that have the same amount. Along with making groups where one group has one more than the other. This will be done by being told how many are in the first group, by rolling two dice to make the first group and by the students telling their neighbor how many they want in the first group. (This last way is done to promote discussions between the students and for them to help each other if they are having trouble.) 

*We are quickly finishing this module, which means our end of the module math test will be coming soon. Please make sure to go over the vocabulary with your child so that everyone does well on the test. :)

Here is a Youtube Video to use for discussion with your child. Please note the video uses the Greater than Less than sign. We DO NOT use the sign in Kindergarten. 

SAXON, SIGHT WORDS AND BLENDS

We will be reviewing all the letter sounds and formations we have learned thus far in Saxon. They go over blends all the time. so I thought it was time to add my Blend Slideshows to our lessons. :) The slideshows focus on a blend a week. They showcase a picture and the students tell me whether the picture begins with a single sound or a blend. (We have only discussed consonant blends. I'm not sure if Saxon has us learning vowel blends this year. That's to be seen!)

 Our Sight Words for the week are: part, time, how, or. 

I understand two days isn't long to discuss these words, so we'll be reviewing them next week along with the new words. :)

READING

We will focus on Martin Luther King, Jr. We will discuss why we celebrate a day in his honor. :) We will read a Rourke E-Book and an easy reader.  (Look for the easy reader to come home.) Our vocabulary will be: equality, discrimination, non-violent and segregated.

WRITING

We are beginning Opinion Writing, so what better way to begin than by discussing what made Winter Break so great!! Was it the presents, the vacation you may have taken or just being able to stay home and relax? I can't wait to hear what the students share. :)

Here is a chart for you to discuss with your child about more ways of sharing their opinion than just saying, "I like _____." Also make sure to discuss reasons why they like something, they will need to support their opinions! (The chart was given to me from the School District.)
