Week of October 3

Our resources for the week are: Monday-P.E., Tuesday- MUSIC with Ms. Broach and Thursday MUSIC with Mrs. Biernacki. We will be having Vision Screenings on Monday. Friday is RED DAY! I'm looking for red shorts, red shirts, red socks, even red sunglasses and bows! I can't wait to see RED! Also, TiDarius is bringing snacks for the class. :)
**This week I am beginning testing for the end of the quarter. The students will be tested on the items they didn't master at Progress Report time and everyone will be tested on Sight Words.**

 MATH
We will be reviewing our counting skills: rote counting to 100, counting forward and counting backward on a number line, number writing, counting groups, making groups. We are continuing to discuss linear and array style configurations. We will use a 10-dot card (ten frame) to count objects. We will discuss two groups that make 10 by using two different colored color tiles.
(Example; 5 blue and 5 red, 7 blue and 3 red, etc)
If your child is having trouble counting objects/sets or they just want to have a little counting fun... Check out these games by clicking the title: Curious George Count Your Chickens, Birthday Candle Counting and Fishy Counting

 Science
I am happy to say we will be having two days of Science Lessons!! WOOHOO!!
We will be watching a District made Powerpoint on What is a Scientist? We will get to see that everyone is a scientist, even five year old boys and girls! We will also get to use a hand lense (magnifying glass) to see details in objects around the room. Then we will play a mini matching game- we will match teeny tiny thumbnail pictures to its matching full size picture.

Reading
We are starting a new Module in Reading, it is titled Stories. During this module we will work on retelling a stories plot and discussing what makes the story fiction. Plot is retelling a story in proper sequence~ beginning events, middle events and ending events, and making sure to use Character names when available. Some of the retelling's will use pictures and others we will be drawing pictures for. We will work on retelling with transition words~ first, next, then and last. **During these retellings I will be doing a lot of prompting with the students= "What happens after the acorn hits Chicken Little on the head?" "What happens after the  wolf enters the house?" You will want to practice this at home and be prepared to help your child when they need it. After you work together on the retelling, repeat the retelling from beginning to end for your child.

Here are the titles of the stories and the vocabulary in them. Click on the title to practice retelling it with your child.
Chicken Little~ acorn, den, sly
The Three Little Pigs~ blazing, chimney, huff, puff
Three Billy Goats Gruff~ creaked, gobble, longed, scarcely
The Wolf and the Seven Kids~ bleated, disguise, kids, miller, terrified
Breman Town Musicians~ musician, panting, perched

In Saxon we will be reviewing compound words, rhyming words and the beginning sounds of words. We are still coding words with a breve. A breve looks like a smiley face. The students have learned the rule for using a breve... "We use a breve when it is a vowel followed by a consonant. Then the vowel has a short sound."
Check out this Jack Hartmann letter a video.

Our sight words for the week are: five, on , get and so.
Check out this slideshow and if your child is having trouble with sight words, review past slideshows and use Sight Word Money cards.

Writing
Our lessons this week will continue to work on stretching our words. The students are getting good at noticing the beginning sounds of words! Some even attempted to write their words without my help. :)  We will also work on adding settings to our pictures. The students know that their characters do not fly, but now we will be adding details so that a reader knows where the setting of their stories are.
Ex. if they were in their living room. One would expect to see a few of the following items- a couch, television, coffee table, windows, doors, etc. The people might be laying down, sitting on the couch or walking into the room.
