Last Week of Kindergarten- Week of May 30.

Image result for last week of school clip art

The students have worked hard and done so much!! This week is all about FUN. We will have crafts, extra recess, dance time, a guest reader and a class party!! ooh we will also be reminiscing and going through the past slideshows posted on the blog. (We watched the first week of school last week and I totally teared up over how young the students looked. They have grown so much!!)

Monday there is no school.
Wednesday is an Early Release Day.
Thursday we have a guest reader~ Curtis Brown, Jr. Author & Illustrator of I Lost My Laugh will be coming in to share his book and his love of reading. We also have our Jungle Party from 11:30-1:30.
Friday dismissal begins at 12:00. Most parents arrive early, so you may want to do the same. :) Also, any students that leave early do not receive Report Cards. You will need to pick them up from the front office the following week.

Other than that~ Please send me the pictures taken from the Award Ceremony so I can make one big slideshow for the class. The students know so many of the parents that they adore seeing them and shouting out their names when we see slideshows. :)

Award Ceremony Day

Thank you to everyone that was able to come or send emails of Happy Wishes for the students. Your love and recognition made all the kids smile. :)

Although I made the DVD, I know some wanted to share it with loved ones far away. So I decided to post it on the blog too. Enjoy!

Week of May 22

Image result for award ceremony clipart
I can't believe we are nearing the end of the school year... only 9 more days left.

This week we have Resources on Monday-MUSIC, Tuesday-P.E., Thursday-ART & Friday-COMPUTER LAB. Our Kindergarten Award Ceremony is on Friday at 1:00p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room. (You may want to arrive a little early. Our Ceremony is with three other Kindergarten Classes and seats fill up quickly.) Following the Ceremony we will have cookies and milk in our room and then you are free to sign your child out early. Take them out and spoil them! :)

Math
We are continuing our Module on shapes. We are using pattern blocks to come up with new shapes and describe them. Our focus is on sides and vertices.

Reading Skills Time
We have a lot of info here! We are reviewing all sight words. Our word family is the -eet family. Our blend is TR-. And we are reviewing middle vowels again with a mixed slideshow. (I remember the speaker doesn't work once I post it, so if you would like it let me know and I'll email it out. :)  )

Reading
We are continuing on with the Presidents and American Symbols. This week our stories will focus on Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt and Barack Obama. We get small glimpses into their early life and their contribution to the presidency.
We have discussed all the names of the Presidents and watched a few Youtube videos. Here is one that included Donald Trump.

Writing/ Memory Book
These are coming along great! I can't wait for the students to bring them home and share with you. :)

Science
We will have some extra time to review the information in our Science Workbooks.

**ATTENTION**
Please check your child's backpack daily for items to be sent home. As we near the end, I begin sending home journals. Parent notes I've kept all year, Workbooks. These items get heavy when left in the backpacks.

Superhero Day

Superhero shirts are always so cute! I love seeing the students giggle when their friend has the same superhero as them. It's the was Best Buddies are made in Kindergarten! :) I even enjoy the students banter about why the character is a superhero and why they aren't. We had a big discussion on how some characters are hero's in their movies and to certain people... that makes them a superhero. (I never argue about superheroes with 5&6 year olds! hahaha I only agree with both sides of the argument.) Also, some students left early and their pictures were not taken...

Hope the slideshow makes you smile!

Library Visit with Mrs.Noah Thomas

Yesterday's library lesson was too cute! They discussed creepy crawly and flying bugs. They were able to look at pictures and name bugs... we need to practice grasshoppers! haha A few thought that if the bug was green= it was a grasshopper!
Mrs.Thomas did her customary dance songs with the kids. Their favorite "Open, Shut them" had a whole new remix of going slow and fast. It was adorable!! They listened to two books: I Love Bugs! by Emma Dodd & Can You Make a Scary Face? by Jan Thomas. The scary face book was very interactive! The students stood for most of the book and giggled the whole way through it.
Then as if the day couldn't get any better, it was craft time! The students made the cutest ladybug bowls. Hope your child's ladybug made it home safely and didn't crawl away!...
Also, Mrs.Thomas gifted all the students with a plastic bug and a free book! :)

Here are two Youtube videos of the books Mrs.Thomas read. The first is read by a Librarian and the second is a mini play based off of the book.

Enjoy all the pictures!!

Math: Modeling Clay and Straws

Using modeling clay and straws to make shapes was the best! The students were so focused on making sure their modeling clay was just right to support the straws, the room was really quiet! :)  The main things you would hear were "I did it!" or "That looks great!"  Our first day was 2D shapes and then we moved on to 3D. For some reason though, my pictures are reversed. haha

Enjoy!

Rainbow Birds Art

Today Mrs.Phillips gave the students back their last Art Project. Watching the students carry the pictures back to back to class was adorable!! All of them were so proud of their hard work!
Mrs. Phillips told me they'd worked multiple times on this project and she was so proud of all their hard work. :) So of course I had to take pictures!

Enjoy the art work!

Week of May 15

I am still exhausted from yesterday's International Day, so bare with me if I sound tired... haha

Image result for class picture clipart
This week is going to be very calm compared to the past two weeks!! Monday we are stopping by the Reading Coaches classroom and everyone is receiving a free book. :) Wednesday the PTA is going to take our Class Picture. Friday Mrs.Noah Thomas is stopping by to complete her last Library Lesson for the school year. :) Our Resources for the week are: Tuesday-ART, Wednesday-ART, Thursday-P.E. and Friday-MEDIA. Not to mention Friday is Super Hero T-shirt Day!! Noelani is bringing in Fun Friday Snacks for the class. :)

MATH
We are beginning our last Module on Shapes! Analyzing, Comparing and Composing shapes. :) This week we will review 2D and 3D shapes. We will discuss the number of sides and corners. Then we will use pattern blocks to make our own 2D shapes. Plus we will get to use sticks and clay to make 3D shapes.
** Please remember every Duval Math Lesson has a Home Learning sheet. I wouldn't feel right throwing them away, so I will send them home after we complete the lesson.**

SAXON, SIGHT WORDS, VOWELS, BLENDS AND WORD FAMILIES
I have chosen to combine a few Saxon lessons. I want to expose the students to as much as possible before the end of the year. :) With that being said, we will only complete Saxon three times this week. We will review the  diagraph ck and sh sound. Then focus on the hard th sound as in feather.
We will review the sight words from last week.
I have another long and short vowel slideshow. (The students did much better during the review test!! I was very happy!) Our blend is SM- and our word family is -ight. There were only a few that could read the sight word right. So I thought this was a great family to learn!!
Check out the slideshows and video below.

READING
After all the International information the students learned, I decided to step back and return to the USA! We will use the Duval Reads Curriculum and learn about the American Presidents and symbols for the US. The lessons this week focus on the White House and George Washington. We learn how he was a General that wore spectacles and that he was an honest and clever man!
Here is a catchy Youtube video about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln to help get the kids excited!

WRITING
Continuing the Memory Book... I forget how many pages it is! haha

SCIENCE
Due to all the extra activities going on, I do not forsee us having any time for Science this week.

International Day

I hope all the students went home with stories about International Day!! It was a fun and BUSY day, We weren't in our classroom very much... because we were too busy traveling THE WORLD! (While we traveled through the school, I forgot to take pictures. So you'll need to ask your child about all the other areas of the building.) ooh and I need to say THANK YOU to Mrs.Goode for spending the day with me. She was a huge help making sure the students stayed together when we "traveled" the world and in making the Maasai necklaces. :)

Well, we began with an amazing parade! Then we went to all 7 continents and while we were "visiting" we had our passports stamped and a cookie sample. The students either loved the cookies or HATED the cookies! haha We saw four presentations: Mrs.Silkert (a teacher at CLE) taught the students a folktale about Cheetahs. Mr.Barry (the amazing Magician!) had a magic show and reminded the kids that friendships and kindness are most the important things in life. Mrs.Hind (a school district employee at the district office) told the students what it was like moving to the USA from Morocco 10 years ago and taught them each how to write their names in Arabic. Then our last presenter was Mrs.Cantwell (a teacher at CLE) who discussed Kenya with the students and the Maasai people, she had the students all make the Maasai necklace. Plus she told the students a little about living in South Africa.

It was an AMAZING DAY!! Check out the slideshow to see the students in the presentations and look out for the cutest International Shirts!!

Our Museum Guide, Mr. Richard was great telling us facts about the Cummer Museum and our volunteer Mrs.Goode was perfect too! We couldn't have asked for another else!!

Week of May 8

Image result for international day clip art

This is another week of International Crafts, Mother's Day and Father's Day Crafts and End of the Year Testing! OOh and I almost forgot... Field Trip to the Cummer Museum.   (Just typing it all has me tired! haha)

We have Music Resource on Thursday and we also have a Chorus Performance that day at 9:00a.m. Our Field Trip to the Cummer is on Tuesday. It is only a half day trip. So we will eat lunch when we return to school. Our lunch time that day will be 12:25-12:55. International Day is ALL DAY on Friday. We will not be in our classroom much, so that also means I will not be able to check email much. If there are any emergencies contact the Front Office and they can find me. Jaiden brought in Fun Friday Snacks for the class- Now I just have to remember to pass them out after all the International Day fun!!

Now... on to the remainder of the weekly post!
Math
We are finishing up our Module on teen numbers and we will be taking the Module Test on Thursday.  Here is a breakdown of the test: counting and writing by 10's. Counting forwards and backwards from any given number (I have a 100's chart hanging in the room. Remind your child to use it if they need to!) Writing equations forwards and backwards for a teen number. Breaking a number apart with a number bond.

Writing
Continuing on with our Memory Book. The students are working soooo hard!!

Reading
We are going on the online book site Epic Books and reading books about Africa's climate, people, foods and animals.

Saxon, Sight Words, Blends, Word Families and Medial Vowels
We are continuing on with the Saxon Lessons. They are reviewing CVC words, CCVC and even CVCC. :) They students are great at decoding the words and reading them! Our sight words are: right, through, just & us. Our blend for the week is SK- and our Word Family is -oke. Then we're reviewing vowels by figuring out if the middle vowel sound in long or short.
Here are the slideshows:

Science
We are continuing work in the Science Workbooks. It's amazing to see how much information they students have retained. Not to mention their thinking is more in depth than it was at the beginning of the school year.

International Day Parade

Image result for international day parade
A few of you have emailed me questions about the Parade, so I wanted to make a post about it.

We will have a International Day Parade Friday morning. The students that are dressed in traditional clothing for a country and have the countries flag & Sign of the countries name will participate by walking in the parade. This means... if your child wears a Karate Gi, they may not be able to walk in the parade. Or shorts with flip flops, they may not be able to walk in the parade.

Some dress ideas I remember= a toga for Greece, a flowery dress for the Island Countries, a kilt for Ireland or Scotland, cheongsam dress for China, I even remember seeing a pharoah from Egypt!

STUDENT DO NOT HAVE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE PARADE! If a student is not dressing up for the Parade, they will sit with me outside our classroom and watch the parade. (I dress up a little but this is one parade that I LOVE to sit and watch!! It's amazing to see everyone all dressed up!)

**I went through some of my past school blogs and I found this International Day slideshow. It'll give you a glimpse into International Day. (My students from this video are now in 3rd grade...they grow up so fast!) There's a short video of the Parade for you watch. Disclaimer~ I do not know if the man with the bagpipes or the dancing dragon are attending the Parade this year.  **

Hopefully everyone went home Friday with exciting Play Day stories!! I had a ton of shout outs saying, "This is the BEST DAY EVER!!" (It was adorable!!)   I tried taking pictures while the students were running here and there... sadly I was only able to get a few.  THANK YOU to everyone that participated in the school fundraiser and purchased a Shaved Ice from Snowasis.

Enjoy the photos I was able to take!
Ooh I almost forgot, I want to say a huge THANK YOU to the parents that Volunteered and ran a Play Day Station~ Mr.Lukacovic, Mrs.Goode, Mrs.Edmond and Ms.Sutherland.

Ssssss Snakes!

Image result for snakes hanging clip art
Yesterday we made snakes for International Day. :) The students did a fantastic job making links and joining them together. There were a few that had some trouble, but the other students were great at helping them figure it out.
Check out the sideshow to see a little of the snakes. (You can't see the whole snake, because the students are standing in front of the "Pyramids of Giza" they made and I was determined to get it in the photos! haha)

Also, I've mentioned this to the students multiple times... the crafts will not go home until AFTER International Day. Please remind your child. They really wanted to take them home today. :)

Silly Monkeys!!

Image result for africa craft clipart
We moved on to our next African Craft... monkeys!! They are adorable (but the flamingos are still my favorite! haha). The students did great creating a monkey that was just THEIRS! We went over different ways to do the mouth, the ears, the arms & legs... and they made them all different!!
Please don't look to see the monkey going home any day soon. We are going to use them to decorate for International Day too. (We plan on hanging them from vines in the hallways)

Before I forget, I want to show you the Pyramids we made. We used real dirt to decorate them!! Some of the students thought it was the funniest thing ever, haha I wasn't able to get everyone's pyramid on the poster, so some students will be bringing them home early. :)

Flamingo Handprints

Yesterday we finished the Flamingo Handprint crafts... they are the cutest flamingos I've ever seen!! I stayed late yesterday just so I could hang them up and share them with all of you. :)
(And just in case your child tells you. The flamingos are not hanging up on our Bulletin Board. They are down the hall, on Mrs.Curran's Bulletin Board. We switch for International Day. She'll soon be hanging up her students Dingo Craft! )

Enjoy the pictures!!
